Friend's LGW-YVR flight tomorrow cancelled - advice please

Hi all, a friend was due to travel on BA2279 tomorrow from LGW-YVR and has received a cancellation notice today due to a technical issue. They have been rebooked two days later which is hugely disruptive to their plans. Does anyone have any tactics I could suggest to him to get him booked on the Air Canada direct flight tomorrow, or even an indirect alternative with JetBlue? According to Google Flights, there are no oneworld alternatives available, both direct or indirect.

That is very little availability that I can see for tomorrow on other routings. Not sure what cabin your friend is in, but there is one seat (in all classes) on KL1006 from LHR to AMS, connecting to KL681 to YVR. I don’t think BA will rebook onto Westjet (could be wrong) and only other flight I see 1 seat (in all cabins) is BA to Seattle and AC up to YVR. Best to call up and ask what else is available.

Ask to be rerouted via any other North American airport? Hope your friend finds a way

Has Swiss from Zurich been tried out? That's actually Edelweiss, and I know some of the Lufthansa routes won't ticket. But otherwise Air France from Paris should be OK assuming your friends are in economy - though there is also space in other cabins. Broadly speaking a connection within 24 hours should allow use of many IATA airlines. More general information here.

It will make a longer route, but if they can rebook via Toronto on BA and the AC/Porter from YYZ to YVR that will get them there.

I'd avoid Westjet within Canada at the moment, as there was a hailstorm last week that damaged 10% of the 737 fleet and they are having many cancellations right now. WS's 787 fleet is ok, so if you can get space from LHR or EDI you would be ok.

Thanks all for the helpful advice. We managed to get him on the Air Canada flight tomorrow after BA initially refused - a big relief for him!

Good to hear it worked out. Keep in mind that under Canadian law BA was legally required to rebook on either their next available flight or any interline parters's next available flight departing within the next nine hours.

After nine hours BA would have been required to rebook on any airline in the passenger's ticketed cabin.

Thiis is good to know in case my trips to/from YYZ & YVR are cancelled/screwed up.
It seems that it does not matter which class I fly in - correct?

Does that law apply to a non-Canadian airline flying to rather than from Canada?

The "on the day" rebooking process applies to all passengers, all booking classes. redemption and commercial tickets. BA has a long list of airlines that it has an agreement with, and it has been incorporated into the App Disruption Menu, but as with all things IT related it doesn't take much for the tool not to work, plus it's fairly slow to update and thus show all options. A phone agent can push things through a bit more, but some phone agents are poorly trained and not that experienced. Hence FT can help clarify what is possible or not. WestJet is one where I don't know the status, though there were some codeshares in the past, and WS is an IATA member. Another complication is if you are on an AA ticket and say start from Paris and the disruption is apparent in Paris - this may offer a new routing option avoiding London, and so agents may well say "talk to AA". The reason being that the ticket has to be reissued and it's a lot easier if it's a BA ticket.

Fare class (within same cabin) is irrelevant, but BA is not going to rebook your friend into C/J if ticketed in WTP or WT/Economy (and there is no obligation to do it)

It was posted yesterday... so the AC flight was today.

I know. But at least today - same day as the AC flight - BA had a few seats in Economy (may have been different yesterday if the pax was rebooked to AC already yesterday). It also may be that pax is not in Economy; then no seats on BA85 today.

It does. It applies anywhere in the world on any flight as long as the flight is sold as part of a journey to/ from Canada as part of a single ticket
